When my kids were babies, still small enough that they had a soft spot, I would go to their cribs at night and put my hand on their heads, feeling for their heart beats. Not wanting to wake them, but to reassure myself they were okay.
Today, both of them are in their 20s, and I can no longer touch their life force with my fingertips gently held to their bodies. Sometimes though, late at night, I stand in their rooms watching them sleep, just to see them breathing, still scared the Baby Police will take them away from me.

*This entry started as a post on Facebook when I realized I could use it for Lance’s 100Word Song this week. I’ve missed hanging out with robot Leeroy, so I’ll be over there today.
I think it’s part of the DNA of a parent. Always checking. When they get to be adults, the only part that goes away is any control. Beautiful words and photo. You are one talented lady. Thanks for sharing.

I love, love, love the photo. My babies are 8 & 11 and I feel like I can remember them best as babies when they’re asleep.

My kids are four years apart, and this photo was taken when my youngest was only a few weeks old. It’s one of my favorites of them together. Now, he is 20 and a good 5-6 inches taller than she is.

I knew that I wasn’t the only one. The kid’s almost 16 and I still can’t help it every once in a while. Plus, it always makes me remember when I used to look at his hands while he slept – while everything else was growing up, growing taller, growing older, the little dimpled knuckles on his hands were the last bastion of toddlerhood and I loved them until they disappeared. Your picture is the epitome of sweetness, truly.

The dimples! On their hands and knees… Sometimes, when they are sleeping, I catch quick glimpses of those baby faces still.

This is a huge fear of mine. My 4 1/2 month old is sleeping through the night in his crib in his room now. But I wake up in the middle of the night and worry.

My kids would be seriously creeped out if they knew I watched them sleep, but they will always be my babies, and I will always worry about them.

This mom loved this piece — sometimes it’s hard to remember the baby heads amidst all else that is going on with grown or mostly grown children but they’re still there.

Yep… my kids will always be my babies, no matter how old they are.
