100 Word Challenge: Faith

When I was a kid, unless I was practically dead, I went to church every Sunday morning.

Once I was too old for the children’s sermon, where we wee kiddies would gather on the steps to the altar and sit in rapt fascination while Reverend imparted an age-appropriate homily. We got to leave the sanctuary for a second round of Sunday school, while the grownups and older kids stayed for Big Church. Unfortunately for me and my mother, I was easily bored in Big Church.

To pass the time and help me not get into trouble fidgeting, I’d mark up the worship service program.

I’d go through it crossing out all the As, then the Es then other remaining vowels. If the service went long, I’d start back at B following suit with the rest of the consonants.

This had several benefits for a mother with a restless kid – I sat still, I was quiet and not looking around, and my head was always bowed so I looked worshipful. I never ran out of letters before I ran out of time.

All I needed was a pen or pencil and I was well-behaved for the duration.

It’s been more than a few years since I was marking service programs in church, and I can’t say I wouldn’t use the same distraction technique if I found myself sitting in a wooden pew.

Only now, I wonder what I would be distracting myself from.
