You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know dear
How much I love you
Please, don’t take
My sunshine
Away
I was never “That Mom,” the one who had an extensive playlist of lullabies to sing to my babies. When my daughter was a newborn, the only kid’s song I could remember all the words to was the ABCs.
When she went to pre-school, whenever her class worked on the alphabet, she’d doze off. Her teacher worried that she wasn’t getting adequate sleep at home. Once we figured out the problem, I didn’t know whether to laugh (which I did, to the point of snorting) or feel guilty for having such a lame grasp of sleep inducing songs (which I did.)
My son was born four years later. You’d think I would’ve put the time to good use and learn some more songs. Nope… I sang this little ditty, or “Away in the Manger.”
At least, I learned my lesson (see what I did there? ABCs… school… lessons?) and didn’t interfere with my son’s education… but I may have given him a God-complex.

Love that song. What a lovely sunset!

I would usually just sing whatever random song popped into my head, but the one constant was always You Are My Sunshine. As my son is now almost 16, this post just brought back so many warm fuzzy memories, so thank you, I needed them 😉

My son turns 20 in a few weeks. That he remembers me singing to him, is all levels of warm fuzzies for me. You’re welcome.

My son says he remembers me singing it to him… that warmed my heart.

I love it! I didn’t sing many traditional lullabies either, but the ABCs were VERY popular here. I had to sing it nonstop in the car. And so I got creative and started singing it backwards. Stupid human trick, but I can still do it. Freaky human trick? Mister Man can accurately say it backwards in about 8 seconds.

That is perfect! I never thought of singing it backwards. Brilliant.

I knew very few actual lullabies when my kids were babies too. My repertoire was made up mainly of Christmas carols which always felt odd during the summer months 🙂

OMG, laughing so hard, because I don’t know those lullaby’s either. I know one, only because when I was a young girl, I loved it. but to ask me to sing something other than that song, forget it. Oh and the little piggies “this little piggie went to” – I forgot the words and made up my own things of where the piggies went to. My husband thought I was nuts!
