Life is beautiful

The following post, published almost exactly one year ago, was written at a time when I was struggling mightily with some overwhelming issues with my son. He was in a very dark place because of some medical problems, that at the time seemed unsurmountable. I was literally drowning in worry and helplessness.

During this past year – with the support of some amazing friends, and the care and treatment for my son by some wonderful doctors and counselors – he is doing so much better, and I don’t feel so helpless any more. My worries, while still there, aren’t so crushing.

It was good for me to see how far we have come, and that you should NEVER give up hope, that there is always beauty to be found.

Lately, if asked, I would have told you that yes, life sucks… big, hairy donkey balls. I’ve been angry beyond reason and it was literally destroying me…. not good.

I let myself wallow in what I thought was a bottomless pit of misery, when all I really needed to do was stand up.

Life doesn’t suck. It taunts you, mocks you, can bitch slap you silly, but it can be incredibly beautiful if you let it. This is something I need to keep telling myself, and remembering that in the midst of the bad, there is also the good.

Life’S BEAUTIFUL…

… at sunrise and sunset, when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest and you’re granted a glimpse of Heaven

… when you watch your baby peacefully sleeping, even if she’s 22 years old, or he’s 18

… in that moment before your lips touch those of someone you love and you swear a spark flashes

… when good days finally outweigh the bad

… in the laughter of a child

… wrapped in the supportive, loving embrace of a friend

… in breathless laughter pulled from deep inside

… when you realize you can’t ‘fix’ it, but you can find a way to make it better.

… when you’re surrounded by the people you love and who love you

… when you can make a positive difference in someone’s life

… when lying in the arms of your significant other, blissfully ignorant of the outside world

… in the breathtaking miracle of birth

… in the bloom of a flower, in the trill of a bird, in the wet-nosed kiss of a beloved pet

… when washed clean by sun-warmed rain, and chilled by the icy sweetness of fresh fallen snow

… when lost in a good book, or thrilled by a new song

… when you finally realize that whatever life throws at you, you will survive

Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way, and that so many things that one goes worrying about are of no importance whatsoever… ~ Isak Dinesen

  1. This is truly inspiring and really is a “reality check” for the days you THINK are really bad could just be so much worse. Thanks for putting this mommy-crying-over-spilled-milk in my place today 😉

  2. Such a beautiful reminder to capture the beautiful moments that make up life, and to try to let the larger picture (which can be terribly hard at times) fade into the background a little.

  3. I can so relate to this! In the last few months I’ve watched my son overcome and work through some huge challenges. Through therapy, medication, and support he’s getting better. A few months ago, I was depressed, worried, and beat! Life if beautiful. We just have to find the beauty!
