Five boxes

The sum total of one man’s days
Culled into five identical cardboard boxes
An eclectic collection of Sharpie-scented paradoxes
Labeled with dates and “fragile” written slantways

Sepia photos of teenage lovers in a shiny halcyon haze
Rusty skeleton keys without maps to the treasure each unlocks
The sum total of one man’s days
Culled into five identical cardboard boxes

Woolen cardigans destined to be Goodwill castaways
Pockets emptied of tattered origami foxes
Folded handwritten notes reminding him to bring home sausage
A meager lifetime of memories sorted, packed and stacked down unlit hallways
The sum total of one man’s days

Inspiration: Boxes
(Rondel: a French poetry form consisting of 2 quatrains and 1 sestet with the rhyming sequence of ABba abAB abbaA. The capital letters indicate the repeated lines.)
