It’s been a while since I’ve been on a photo hike, and I’ve missed my wanderings. This weekend I trekked around Fort Pickens in Pensacola. I’ve visited the fortress many times, so I strayed from the stronghold itself, and instead hiked around trails at the outlying Langdon and 234 Batteries, which border the beach and meander through the marshes.

I wanted you to know I pinned the pictures of your marsh heron because I saw the Pin It buttons. But I’m not sure if you are really intending your pictures to be pinned. I enjoyed the post – I lived in Tampa years ago, but never made it to the panhandle. I enjoy this type of “abandoned history”.

Thank you, Alana. Florida does have some beautiful and intriguing historical attractions. Pinning the photo is fine, but I was a little surprised since I didn’t add any Pinterest sharing options on any of my media files or posts. If you don’t mind, could you send me a screenshot of photo with the Pin It button? It would help me figure out how the sharing option was included.

If you are ever in this area, the Fort is a fascinating place to visit. It has such a long and rich history.

Last January I visited Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and flew into Pensacola. It was beautiful. Loved the beaches – and we visited a lighthouse there and I was so proud to climb all the way up! Thank you for the memory! (I’m here from NaBloPoMo just FYI!)

What type of gun is that? Is it from WWII? I had no idea there were forts in FL. We have forts around me that are from the Revolutionary War.

It’s called a “shield gun” and was used during WWII. The Fort, near Naval Air Station Pensacola, was completed in 1834 and was used to defend the coast through the end of the War. Fort Barrancas, located aboard NAS Pensacola, was built by the British in the mid 1760s. Both are open to the public.
