Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you…” ~ Leviticus 19:28

“Please, the whole town is coming.”

“And most of them are nuts off our family tree.”

She gave me that Look mothers use to frighten children into doing what they’re told.

“I don’t understand why it’s awkward for you,” I said. “You’ve never had a problem before.”

“I know, you think everything is awesome.”

“‘Awesome’ isn’t exactly the word I’d use. I’m… ‘happy’ with it. Besides, I’m a grown woman, what I do isn’t a reflection on you.”

“Try telling that to Uncle Talmadge. He’ll want to lay hands on you and rebuke your demon.”

“I’ll go change my blouse.”

This week’s challenge is inspired by Everything is Awesome,” by Tegan and Sara
*Mid-way through a tattoo I had inked in Aug. 2011, adding new elements to an existing tattoo. The quote, in Gaelic, translates to, “What does not kill me, makes me stronger.”

I believe all good fiction includes an element of truth, and all good photography includes an element of fantasy. In this journal I hope to give voice to the stories swirling around in my head, and to capture the images I see through my camera’s lens.

  1. Love your tattoo. I was just talking with 2 coworkers yesterday about tattoos. The main thing preventing me from getting one (besides fear) is I’ve never been able to decide on that one thing I might be willing to permanently imprint on my skin.

  2. That is a brilliant story and a brilliant tattoo. I loved ‘nuts off our family tree’ and will shamelessly steal it. Lyssa M x

  3. I thought that was a celtic in nature. I wasn’t aware of that passage in the Bible. So is it a permanent tattoo or just a temporary one?
