Method to my madness

I’ll make the same deal with you all that I made with my son. After making a simple confession, one that brought taunts and derision, from not only my husband and daughter, but also my own mother, you will have one chance to mock me, then we will never speak of it again.

The trip I’m taking this weekend? I was packed early this morning. Today is Tuesday, I leave late Thursday morning.

To a word, when The Mister and College Kid learned of my premature luggage stuffing, they both asked, “you do know what day it is, right?”

My mother laughed uncomfortably, tsked, then quickly changed the subject. She likes to avoid conflict.

I do have a method to my madness. I now know what clothing and shoes I plan to wear, toiletries are in their own small bag, my camera and paraphernalia are stowed in its backpack, and my shoulder bag is culled of TSA verboten items. I can now decide, well ahead of panic time, if I need to take anything else with me.

A collateral benefit of that is, if the menfolk wish to fete me for my birthday early (I’ll be traveling on my actual birthday), I won’t be frantically pinging through the house trying to gather my things and wondering where my brown mules are hiding.

If I had left all the packing to the last-minute, I wouldn’t be free to be wined and dined.

When my son saw my bags ready, he merely smiled and shook his head. He’s my favorite right now.

  1. As a weather alert (in case you need to pack extra), it’s going to be in the 60s up here in the mountains LOL Hope you two have a GREAT time!

  2. Darn, I was really hoping for a reason to mock you! Instead, I just admire you and mock myself for not having such discipline! I packed less than an hour before I had to leave. Don’t even ask how many things I forgot! Even better, when I got there, I thought I’d forgotten things that I remembered. Your way is so much better.

  3. My parents are like you…. they will pack a week (or more sometimes!) in advance for a trip. For me, I have to pack at least a day in advance, if not two days. My husband… waits until the last minute, which drives me up a wall.

    1. My husband is a late packer too. Literally minutes before he has to leave to catch a plane, and he is throwing clothes into a suitcase. That works for him, it makes me stabby.

  4. I like the idea of packing early, but actually implementing it is much more difficult! I normally compromise by making a packing list a week in advance (and tweaking it over the next several days) and just making sure my clothes that I want to take are clean. Then, a day or so before I leave I just check stuff off the list and add it to my bag. That way, I also don’t forget things like phone chargers that I might need in the interim.

  5. First, have a wonderful time..this vacation is going to be fantastic, just like you!

Second..I pack early, normally a week before we leave I bring a suitcase upstairs and I stop my family from wearing specific things I know I will be packing (down to undies) so that those clothes are clean and ready. I make piles, I set aside bags, etc. I’d rather it that way than the screaming and yelling of last minute.

I come by it honestly..my mom is a world class packer and I learned at her knee.

And as women we always pack too much, but that is because we’ve learned how upside down things can go when you travel.

    Have FUN!!!!!!! Xo
