Web of lies

It’s not poisonous spiders you have to worry about, it’s poisonous people. The insidious way they insinuate themselves into your lives. Injecting their paranoia and fear into your thoughts, casting a pall over your own self confidence until you doubt every thought you have.

Just as venomous vermin seduce you with their bright colors and hypnotizing façades, hiding their true deadly nature, these toxic people can appear normal, even attractive. Charming and charismatic. That’s how they lure you into their web of deceit.

“This won’t hurt,” the lies roll so easily from their tongues. “You’ll only feel a little prick.”

Some lies do have a shadow of truth behind them.

Trifecta, a weekly one-word prompt, challenges writers to use that word in its third definition form, using no less than 33 words or no more than 333. The week’s prompt is: Poisonous [adj. \ˈpȯiz-nəs, ˈpȯi-zən-əs] 3: spiteful, malicious

  1. Like many readers and writers, I’m a big fan of opening lines of novels, poems, etc. Yours here is very strong, indeed. Not to mention your closing line. I love the way you manage to throw some humor into your writing. Always making sure we’re paying attention. We are. I hope you’ll come back again next week.

  2. People can be hateful and horrible. In my little town, I have run across more “friends” who have turned out to be horrible people than all my years living in a large city. Excellent post on a very touchy subject!

  3. I’m amazed at what comes out of people’s mouths. Not the vulgarity but the vile thoughts of hurt and meanness. I love the feel of this. It put me ina place to write mine.
