Cake by any other name

My son is in his second year at technical school. If you know anything about his educational and/or personal history, you would realize how awesome that truly is.

During his first year, he only attended as a part-time student. This year? Full-time… booyah!

I digress…

At 18, he is by far the youngest student in the Automotive Maintenance and Repair program. That doesn’t save him from the often ribald teasing meted out by his fellow students. Let’s just say an emergency car wash was necessary when anatomically correct body parts were drawn in the dust on his truck.

They are such kidders!

Again I digress… there is a reason for this rambling, honest.

Thanksgiving holidays are this week, and the Boy gets three days off from class for a nice long weekend. Today the students are having their own celebration, and pot-lucking a dinner. My son asked that I bake a cake. A cake I’ve made for his birthday for the past several years. We call it Better Than Homework Cake.

That was the kid-friendly name I used when he was younger.

Considering the taunting he would get if he called it by its more familiar name ~ Better Than Sex Cake ~ we’ll stick with the sanitized version.

Better’n Homework Cake

1 box cake mix (yellow or chocolate)
1 12 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
1 small 14 oz. jar favorite ice cream topping (hot fudge, caramel, etc…)
2 small tubs whipped topping
Garnish (chopped nuts, toasted coconut flakes, sprinkles, pineapple tidbits, maraschino cherries, etc…)

Prepare cake mix according to package directions. While still hot from the oven poked holes in cake with a wooden spoon handle and pour canned milk and ice cream topping over cake. Using a spatula, gently spread the toppings evenly over the top.

Let cool completely. (It’s important that the cake is not even slightly warm or the whipped topping will melt)

Once the cake and pan are cooled, ice with whipped topping. Add garnish of your choice.

The cake can be eaten immediately, but it’s best to chill it for a couple hours to let the canned milk and ice cream topping to seep into the cake.

Refrigerate any leftovers.

  1. Uhhhh yeah. We don’t need to add therapy for the boy, right? 😉 I have had cake like that, but ours was always a trifle. I like this one better… FAR less work. I hope he has a great time at the pot luck!
