Too fond of books

“Books are so banal and she doesn’t even use an e-reader,” Soleil said checking her Snapchat feed.

“Seriously,” Esmé nodded, transposing their exchange into a Facebook status. “She could catch the movie on Netflix.”

“I heard printing all that paper was bad for the environment too,” Soleil agreed without looking up.

Despite the appearance of being engrossed in her reading, Maisie eavesdropped on the girls’ conversation and felt pity for them. They would never understand her obsession with the magic of reading.

Maisie already knew which books she’d take into the next life and which character she’d return as.
