100 Word Challenge: Adventure

From left, Destin, FL; Bondi Beach, Australia; Valencia, Spain; Colombo, Sri Lanka; The Sahara, Morocco.
In front, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

I have never traveled outside of the contiguous United States, instead I live vicariously through friends and family who have the wanderlust.

While in grad school, my daughter spent some time in Morocco for a Study Abroad program. Then as a present to herself when she graduated, she and her college roommate took a Mediterranean cruise.

She brought back gifts for us all, but the one thing I was most excited for was the sand, plain old, sand.

My daughter brought me ochre sand from The Sahara Desert, and taupe sand from Valencia, Spain.

My beach buddy, the one I get in the most trouble with, is also a world traveler. She knows of my love of worldly sand.

From her travels she has brought me sand from Bondi Beach in Australia and most recently on a trip to India, calico and cinnamon-colored sand from Sri Lanka and Varanasi.

Of course, I have a sample of the fine, white sand from our own Crystal Beach in Destin, Florida.

Each sample of sand is different in color, texture and weight. Those differences fascinate me. How was each formed, how long did it take to break down into sand, what are they formed from, what made them the color they are?

Perhaps it’s not too late, and one day I’ll collect sand from some far off beach myself. I’ve read that Iceland has many beautiful, black sand beaches.

“It isn’t the mountain ahead that wears you out; it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.” ~ Rodan of Alexandria

This week’s word is:

  1. I wish I had brought home a sand sample from all the places we have visited. Seems like a good excuse to go back though 😉

Entry added to Mr. Linky. Have a great weekend, everyone!

  2. Here goes for the March 9th challenge – Adventure.

Funny. It didn’t seem like an adventure when she walked into the hospital for her first day of Clinical Pastoral Education, a requirement for her Master’s Degree. Three months of learning, being with patients and families to counsel, console, and when necessary, confront.

Who knew that sleeping in the on-call room to respond to needs in the middle of the night would cause her to question her faith and ability to remain compassionate in the face of sadness, sorrow, and death?

The learning? Loneliness and sadness will visit everyone. Regardless of age, race, nationality… we are all the same.

    • It all started with the sand on the beaches where I live. It is so unexpected. When my daughter had the experience of camping in a tent on the Sahara, sand from there was a given.
