So, lay me down
Let the only sound
Be the over flow
Pockets full of stones
~ Florence Welch, Florence and the Machine, “What the Water Gave Me”
This scene and the song lyrics seemed very appropriate to me for this time of year. I live in a tourist area along the Gulf of Mexico. For the next several weeks, we will be inundated by Spring Breakers. Invariably, there will be a drowning or near-drowning all because beachgoers refuse, neglect, don’t know how to decipher the beach warning flags. Rip tides and deceptively deep water can be fatally dangerous, and you can get into trouble faster than you think.
Sadly, someone else may perish trying to save those people who swim out to where they shouldn’t be.
“When I was writing this song I was thinking a lot about all those people who’ve lost their lives in vain attempts to save their loved ones from drowning.” ~ Florence Welch
