Point blank

civil war cannon

Ideas, hurled like cannon balls, are indiscriminate in their destruction. A special license should be required before shooting off your mouth. Spewing ignorant words in a spray of hatred and bigotry, bullets of misogyny and intolerance raining down without any regard for who they wound.

Sticks and stones… words kill more people than guns and knives. You can’t know where your aim might hit. How far the concussion of the blast will reach, who around your target will also fall.

You don’t care, you know your rights. Your first freedom is speech, but do you know the consequences of hate?

  1. I like words that you used to make your point like “concussion” because of how vivid the sensation and power of language is made to seem. It used to be that we spewed our vitriol over the hedgerow or in a parking lot but now, anyone with a keyboard can lash out from any corner of the world. Pandora’s Box has been unleashed and the results can be devastating, as you, so aptly, stated.

  2. …indiscriminate in their destruction… so true. Words matter. There is so much anger being spewed. It seems to grow exponentially day to day. Have you seen the Christmas movie classic, It’s a Wonderful Life? When George Bailey becomes invisible, or never born, the world turns into Pottersville… an evil, vile place. That’s what it seems like to me. We’re turning into Pottersville. We need a George Bailey to pull us out.
