Street royalty

New Orleans silverman riding a bicycle

During the day, he mingles with the common man, and presides over his realm with an iron bearing. A man of obvious renown, he demands respect from his subjects, demands tribute for his favor.

Astride his great steed, he is a commanding figure. Feared by little children and frail women, he need not say a word to make his requirements known.

With a twist of an eyebrow, a curl of a lip, a squaring of shoulders, he intimidates without a single touch.

Inspiration: Street Royalty

Several years ago, while in New Orleans for a freelance writing project, I innocently took a photo of one of the many silverman mimes. Unbeknownst to me, when one captures an image of one of these street performers, it’s customary to tip them… hence the large bucket attached to the bike handle. I didn’t have anything smaller than $20 bill and was getting increasingly skeeved out by his increasingly agitated behavior. All in utter silence. A friend who was with me in the city, working on the same project, came to my rescue and provided a small gratuity, and the scary man went away.

  1. I loved the piece and I am desperately envious that you have been to New Orleans. I loved the tension you managed to catch in just a few sentences Lyssa M x
