The Playground

Pumping his legs up and down, leaning forward then throwing his body backward, he tried, but failed miserably, to get his motions in sync. He wanted to swing free, to feel the wind in his face and the exhilaration of flying, but only managed to hang motionless, dejectedly going nowhere.

It was a sad foreshadowing of how pathetic his life would be. His was a constant struggle to learn the life skills he’d need to be successful. Never catching on to what came so easily for everyone else.

The playground became an incubator for all his insecurities, all his defeats.

100 Word Song, is a writing challenge from Lance, based on a weekly music prompt. The challenge is to answer the prompt in exactly 100 words. This week’s challenge is inspired by “Swing Life Away,” by Rise Against.

I believe all good fiction includes an element of truth, and all good photography includes an element of fantasy. In this journal I hope to give voice to the stories swirling around in my head, and to capture the images I see through my camera’s lens.

  1. Oh I just want to hug this poor kid!
You really said a lot with 100 words, and that’s tough!
I also really liked the picture. It’s perfect.

  2. I like how the Swing protagonist AND antagonist….like the story’s anti-hero too.

You packed a punch with this 100. One of your best.
