Storm prep

Woke up Saturday morning to the news a tropical depression>storm>likely hurricane was developing in the Gulf… oh joy. If it is going to build into a full-fledged hurricane, forecasts say it should happen within the next 48 hours. Shit…

I’ve already started my to-do list for final house prep should that become necessary, but hoping it won’t. Once a storm enters the Gulf, it’s like a pinball game, there’s no telling where it goes until it gets there, and even then it can bounce around spreading the love.

With a lot of work ahead of me, I did the only thing I could do… I went on a photo hike.

Drove over to Camp Helen State Park just outside Panama City. I’ve been there many times before, and wanted to try again to photograph the abandoned pier on that beach. It was overcast and threatening rain, so I think it gave the scene a menacing look, which seemed appropriate considering what was happening out in the Gulf.

(Photos shot with a Nikon D60, using an 18-55mm, 55-200mm, 20mm f/2.8 wide-angle, 50mm f/1.8 prime lens, Nikon CoolPix S205 and/or iPhone4)

  1. There is something very interesting for the eye in those old pier pilings pictures.

I don’t recognize Mr. Bird in the final picture, what kind is he?

    1. I’m not sure what sort of bird it is either. At first I thought it might be a red-wing black bird, but the red feathers are mostly on it’s breast. It was too black to be a robin… I really don’t know. It could possibly be a grosbeak.

  2. The bird looks ready for the storm. I hope you fare well in the next few days. It may stray toward my hometown in Louisiana. Texas needs the rain. Maybe it will keep moving westward.

  3. There’s something so magical to me about Spanish Moss in its natural habitat. I used to work at LeeWards craft stores (now Michael’s) and the bags of slightly smelly, dried Spanish Moss that I brought home to use in crafts were so sad-looking.

  4. My favorite is the second one, but they are all good shots Tara. Hope that you are able to avoid tangling with the storm in some fashion.
