Fortress

A perfect fit, she nestled softly in the crook of my arm. Breathing in her scent, nuzzling her cheek, later I’d swear she smiled up at me.

Parting the expertly swaddled pink and blue striped blanket, I counted and recounted toes and fingers.

With hesitant fingers I stroked her head, seeking the soft spot beneath her cornsilk hair, relieved to find a strong heartbeat.

“He’s gonna want to see her, be part of her life.”

“He can ‘want’ all he wants. I didn’t have any say in what he did to me, but her? He better keep his damn distance!”

The 100 Word Challenge, a writing prompt created by Velvet Verbosity, takes a single theme to tell a story in only 100 words ~ no more, no less. This week’s theme is ‘Distance.’

  1. It’s becoming extraordinary – how much gets said in these 100 Word stories. Of all of us, I think yours are consistently at the top of the heap. I LOVE the way you write.

This is my favorite part – “Parting the expertly swaddled pink and blue striped blanket, I counted and recounted toes and fingers.” The imagery is awesome.
