I love spring time, honestly, I do. The warmer temps, the longer days, birds chirping, people smiling, babies laughing… what’s not to love.
Yard work… yard work is what’s not to love.
After months of dreary weather I finally have to face the of drudgery of cleaning up the detritus of winter.
Over the past weekend I took rake in hand, donned my trusty pair of well-worn work gloves, queued up Santana on the ol’ iPod and got to work. For a few moments, even The Girls, the two Labs who created the mine field I was defusing, kept me company.
I’m not sure if it was my singing or the fear I would put them to work too, but they gave up on me quickly and planted themselves in whatever patch of sunshine they could find and proceeded to ignore me. The menfolk were out doing their manly, men errands so I was on my own.
Periodically, the guys would call, telling me of the successes on their manly, men adventure – found the part they needed for the new project car at the junk yard – and after a stop at the Big Box Store, they would be home soon. Soon to me, based on how far away BBS was, should have been 30 minutes, tops.
Perfect I thought, I can keep working until they get home, and then crank up the grill to fix dinner. Two and a half hours, two complaining knees, five raging vertebra, one partially working shoulder, and numerous blisters later, I gave up. The sun was setting, I couldn’t see where I had raked, and the menfolk were nowhere to be seen, and I still wasn’t done with the yard.
Bright and early this morning, I was at it again, The Girls still hopelessly lazy, and my menfolk either at the office or still asleep in bed. I have the yard to finish, my raised garden to clear out, flowers to plant. It’s spring time and I have too much to do.

*this is only one of six similar leave piles
Haha, I love Lou’s comment!
I DESPISE gardening and such. I am putting off cleaning up my yard for as long as humanly possible. Blech.
(You’re welcome to come and take it on if you want. 🙂 )

I tried to do a lot of the “cleaning” work during the “winter” months…except of course for the leaves…but I have decided to use them this year to cover the various garden paths I am creating throughout my backyard, I’ll post some photos soon. I still want to say thank you for inspiring me about the raised beds…although mine aren’t raised (too expensive and my husband is not very handy with that sort of thing) they still are “beds” that are still growing cabbage, buttercrunch lettuce, tomatoes, squash, and banana peppers ;)….also, thanks for stopping by my place, I hope to be there more often since I deactivated my Facebook account (too time wasting for me)….anyway, wanted to comment about that book Henrietta…I was eating lunch yesterday at Bob Evan’s and a lady stopped me to see what I was reading (Swan Thieves) and she highly recommended Henrietta…have you finished it? Sorry so long 😉

Tara R.:
A) “Detritus” has always been one of my favorite words.
B) Funny that you would do raking and such-like in the spring, not the fall.
C) Did you find any cherubs to dance in your leaves?

Yikes!
This city girl can’t even imagine such a chore.
But how nice will it be to lounge around enjoying the finished product? So nice. 🙂
