100 Word Challenge: Amateur

I spent all last week – and I mean ALL – working in my backyard. I was raking tons of leaves and pine needles, pulling prickly vines, yanking up tiny oak trees and being an all-around lawn badass.

The result was 20 – that’s a capital T and big zero – large, black trash bags of yard debris. (You may notice my neighbor’s scant three lawn bags sitting forlornly in the upper left corner of the picture – amateur.)

You’d think after all that work, all that sweat and no small amount of blood (I’ll own my clumsiness and tender, white skin the biting flies love), I would have lost five or ten pounds. Nope, I don’t think I went down a single ounce, but my backyard looks outstanding.

The only downside is now that I’ve removed all that humus (different sort of humus/hummus, look it up), the grass has room to breathe and grow, and I’ll have to mow it. The good news is that fall and winter are coming. Even in the Florida subtropics, grass tends to go dormant in the waning months.

Maybe I’ve found my new calling. I should start a lawn care service.

“I don’t work with inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs. I just get to work.” ~ Chuck Close

This week’s word is:

Amateur

What to do:

Using “amateur” for inspiration, write 100 Words – 100 exactly – no more, no less. You can either use the word – or any form of the word – as one of your 100, or it can be implied. Include a link in your post back here, and add your story to the Mister Linky list. If you don’t have a blog, you can leave your submission in the comment section, or as a Facebook status post. Remember to keep spreading the love with supportive comments for your fellow Wordsters.
