100 Word Challenge: Escape

I think my word for 2019, so far, has been Slug – mentally, physically and literarily.

It’s been months (possibly years) since I’ve actually finished a book. Once upon a time, I always had a book with me and read near-constantly. Not so much is the recent past.

I’m happy to say that in the last two weeks that has exponentially changed. In that time, I have finished reading six books and am significantly into another two – hopefully to be finished in the next few days.

It feels amazing to have that joy back.

For a few hours a day, I can escape into 11th Century England, or to a quaint hamlet near Montreal where I’m learning a little French or a fantastical world without cell phones, all the while trying to solve murder and mayhem.

Funny thing is that all of these books were read online – by me – the one who once loudly proclaimed to be a book purist, “no ebooks for me!”

That was until my book buying habit was about to bankrupt me and I often forgot to take my hardback books with me. Not to mention, I am running out of bookshelf space.

I am, however; rarely without my smartphone. As of now, more than 200 novels are literally at my fingertips, then add to that the 100s of 1000s of books I can check out from my local library both online and from the stacks. (I am reading one such library book now, with another patiently waiting in my To Be Read pile.)

This is a bibliophile’s paradise.

I’ve turned off my television and have re-discovered the great pleasure of reading a good book.

What are you reading these days?

“Take no heed of her…. She reads a lot of books.”
~ Jasper Fforde, The Eyre Affair

This week’s word is:

Escape

What to do:

Using “escape” for inspiration, write 100 Words – 100 exactly – no more, no less. You can either use the word – or any form of the word – as one of your 100, or it can be implied. Include a link in your post back here, and add your story to the Mister Linky list. If you don’t have a blog, you can leave your submission in the comment section, or as a Facebook status post. Remember to keep spreading the love with supportive comments for your fellow Wordsters.
