I was out shopping over the weekend and kept crossing paths with this one family – two kids, mom and dad, and grandma.
The boy, maybe 10 or 11, had the most stunning, electric blue hair that I’ve ever seen. Grandma had unicorn hair – teal, purple, blue, pink, yellow. I was envious.
Last time I chanced on them I was on my way out of the store. Their group had stopped and were discussing snack purchases. There was an older couple standing between us facing them. The other woman was perhaps my mother’s age, or at least her generation, She had the sourest look on her face, and was shaking her head and muttering under her breath looking right at this family. I couldn’t hear what she was saying, but it was obvious what she was thinking.
As I walked past the family I leaned down beside the boy and said, “cool hair.” The smile on his face was infectious. I turned to Grandma, “I like your hair too.” Her smile was as big as her grandson’s. I wish I had turned around to look at the other woman. I made a point to say all this loud enough that I knew she had heard me.
Some people seem to have forgotten how to have fun, and begrudge those who haven’t.
I miss my purple hair.
