Ancient time passage
History framed brick by brick
If these walls could talk

Photo taken at Fort Pickens State Park, near Pensacola, FL. Built between 1829 and 1834, the fort was a key military installation during the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, World War I and II, guarding the entrance to Pensacola Harbor. From 1886 until 1913 the fort also served as a prison for captive Native Americans taken in the Apache Wars. Most notably, Geronimo was held there from 1886 until 1888, when he and the remaining Apache prisoners were transferred to Mount Vernon Barracks, north of Mobile, AL. The fort remained in use until being decommissioned in 1947. It was later designated a Florida State Park, then incorporated into the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971. After extensive restoration, it reopened to the public in 1976.
Wow a very nice photo and a great history story behind it. Every place and every picture could have a history to it, and it’s always interesting to read what they are. That was a very beautiful capture!

Very nice image (and history to boot). The photo also reminds me of the duplicate images often found in a bathroom when mirrors are facing each other. Good thing those mirrors can’t talk!

I thought the same thing about this image… the mirror similarity. These archways and passage ways sometime seem to go on forever.

I’d love to know the stories the walls could tell. I suspect there have probably been a few secret rendezvous there!

There are many nooks and niches in the labyrinth of tunnels…

Beautiful photo as always, the colors are fantastic! I love the Haiku! What an amazing piece of history, I would’ve never guess this was in the US! I’m adding it to my bucket list!:)

The whole area is very rich in history. There is also Fort Barrancas aboard Naval Air Station, Pensacola, and St. Michael’s Cemetery downtown. The cemetery dates back to the founding of the city.
