Down a crooked path

trail through tall grass

Whistling in the dark
Kept the nightmares at bay.
Too scared to venture off the path,
Worried what the future held
As it all began to fall apart.

Wild things lurked in the shadows,
Lying in wait, eager for a kill.
My vulnerability
Made me easy prey
To their manipulations.

A secret weapon, concealed in my coat,
Rapier sharp and wicked quick,
Dispatched the fiends.
Unbidden voices came to the rescue
With spellbinding tales, distracting twists

Drowning out the siren’s song,
Keeping me from my fate,
Wandering, astray, disconnected.
Instead, companions share the journey
Pointing out intriguing plots and characters.

This week’s Studio30 Plus Inspired by Stephanie, at From My Write Side, “… it all began to fall apart.”
The 100 Word Challenge is to tell a story in only 100 words. This week’s theme is Whistling

*When elements in my life get unsavory, and I don’t want to deal with the fact that I can’t control certain things, nor can I change them, I depend on the voices in my head to lead me away from my troubles.

I can escape into my stories, where I can do whatever I want – no matter how implausible.
