Smile if you mean it

It’s only called a “funny bone,” because other people laugh when you crack it and go all dead-arm. I used to see the humor, but the older I get, the less tolerance I have for the hilarity of it.

I’m unamused by ridiculous antics of adults or even children. I take offense when my mistakes become joke punch lines. I’m not about “laughing with you.” I know you’re laughing at me, and it pisses me off.

It’s been too long since I’ve had a good belly laugh. Like muscles, a sense of humor atrophies if you don’t use it.

  1. I really dislike that it’s become so common to find humor in the pitfalls of others. We’re supposed to have a thick skin and go along with the laughter, but why should our mistakes be funny? This is why I’ve always disliked shows like America’s Funniest Videos. Most of them are demonstrations of people falling and/or hurting sensitive body parts. What’s funny about that?

    1. I’ve never liked physical humor either… I don’t get the appeal of the Three Stoogies. I also think those video shows encourage people to do dangerous stunts just to get on TV.

Just this week, in the middle of the most horrible accident (Not us, a hazardous spill) and after we’d been in the car for 2+hours and were kind of annoyed with each other, more annoyed with the traffic and both very concerned about the principal staying another 2 hours for aftercare for us (which he did, he stayed until 8pm for us because it took us 4 hrs to get home) my husband brought up a shared joke. What it is doesn’t matter, he was trying to lighten the mood and we laughed, we laughed and repeated each other until tears were streaming down our faces and my stomach still hurts from being that gleeful.

    I know exactly what you mean. I look forward to those moments of levity, of something so funny it brings you to happy tears. ( As an aside, because Modern Family started on USA and they don’t have Law & Order on every night ((WHA??)) I’ve been watching it and Tara? It’s FUNNY. I have laughed out loud, I have replayed the scenes, I have thought..”why wasn’t I watching this show?” …maybe it will lighten you too!)
