Grace didn’t like sitting so still to have her hair brushed, but knew if she squirmed Sister would pull. Instead, she imagined her fairy dolls, their iridescent wings sparkling in the afternoon sun, dancing among the glittering dust motes caught in the light coming through the window.
The giggle just came out. Sister caught it and they both dissolved into belly laughs.
Pig-tail braids finished, she let Sister lead her to the convalescent home’s flower garden, skipping hand in hand.
“When I’m Grace’s age, I hope I have her sense of whimsy,” the head nurse said, watching them go.
The 100 Word Challenge, a writing prompt created by Velvet Verbosity, takes a single theme to tell a story in only 100 words ~ no more, no less. This week’s theme is ‘Whimsy.’

Funny that some people found this sad. I thought it was a delightful idea – I mean, losing one’s mind, must it always be tragic? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it just meant we lived the rest of our days in forever summer?

I didn’t see that twist at the end, in fact I had to re-read it.
At first I was “oh so sweet” and then on a second read, I thought “oh how sad”. Grace has come full circle in her life: child, adult, back to child. I only hope she is happy where her mind has allowed her to be.
Beautiful as always
