Sabine, still shaken, sipped bitter valerian tea.
“The Elders’ll never listen to you,” Sadella, her twin sister, said. “Bernd is senior to you, and they won’t even let him in the council room.”
“I have to try,” Sabine said. “The devils are getting bolder.”
“Only you’ve seen them,” Sadella said, trying to pour Sabine more tea.
“You don’t believe me,” Sabine held her hand over the rim of her cup. “Gran would have.”
“She’s been gone for years, probably dead…” Sadella began. “Don’t look at me like that, you know I’m right.”
“They’ve gotta listen,” Sabine said before passing out.
