She squatted low, her butt just above the packed dirt. Leaning forward on her toes, she dropped her left hand between her splayed legs for balance. Her right hand, covered in a thick, leather glove, was palm out just below her chin.
Her opponent stood perpendicular to her in a fighting stance – knees bent, elbows high, a bat held poised to swing.
Twisting her left foot, she scuffed the ground, creating a mound of loose dust. Watching for the delivery, she timed her move perfectly.
As the ball shot across the plate, an underhanded toss of dirt blinded the hitter.

Someone’s playing dirty. 😉
(Nice new digs – VV is about to get an upgrade in design. Thinking about squarespace, though it’s a little terrifying to commit to.)

Again “based on true events.” When my daughter was about 9, she played softball too. There was a catcher on an opposing team who actually did this. Every time a pitch was thrown, she’d toss a little handful of dirt. It was a dirty trick… see what I did there?

Oh, clever. You have dual meanings for underhanded. Love it!

Thanks, Carrie. I didn’t start out trying to use it in two different definitions, but it came together in a fun way.
