Fairytales

Grace didn’t like sitting so still to have her hair brushed, but knew if she squirmed Sister would pull. Instead, she imagined her fairy dolls, their iridescent wings sparkling in the afternoon sun, dancing among the glittering dust motes caught in the light coming through the window.

The giggle just came out. Sister caught it and they both dissolved into belly laughs.

Pig-tail braids finished, she let Sister lead her to the convalescent home’s flower garden, skipping hand in hand.

“When I’m Grace’s age, I hope I have her sense of whimsy,” the head nurse said, watching them go.

The 100 Word Challenge, a writing prompt created by Velvet Verbosity, takes a single theme to tell a story in only 100 words ~ no more, no less. This week’s theme is ‘Whimsy.’

  1. Um, I see something different.

They’re holding on to the dim light at the end of the dark tunnel their minds are taking them. It’s excruciatingly sad but well written.

I thought they were little kids until the last two lines then I read it again and realized they were “playing” with glimemrs of light in their malfunctioning minds.

Terrific Tara. One of your best.
