
The room reeked of old money. Young men in dark conservative suits, monograms on the breasts of their Italian cotton shirts, gathered for the ritual.
Dark heartwood walls were decorated with portraits of past officers. Agitated pledges huddled in small cliques, crystal brandy snifters in hand. All eyes turned toward the massive mahogany doors as he entered.
His acceptance was inescapable. His legacy traced back generations to the founding members. Rejecting the archetypal uniform, he was a walking billboard for Pantone.
Demanding a cold bottle from the bartender, he brashly announced, “I’m just here for the gratuitous sex and alcohol!”

* The photo is of one of the many Grotesques that adorn the outside of Biltmore House in Asheville, NC. These ornamental structures can be animal or human figures, and feature outlandish expressions or are in bizarre poses. Gargoyles are found at roof edges and are typically downspouts, channeling rain away from the building.
I have this thing about gargoyles. Can’t stop staring. So fascinating.
