The images for this week are all Straight out of Camera. The only editing was to resize. Each set was taken with the same lens, same camera settings, and at the same distance from the subject. The only difference was my willingness to sacrifice my knees for the craft that I love.
Over the last year, I’ve finally gotten past my hesitation to get ‘down and dirty’ for my photos – literally. I have been known to take a knee, sit on the ground – I’ve even lain completely prone to get the angle of a shot that I wanted.
The top photo in each set was shot from a standing position, or slightly stooped at most. The bottom shot was taken from as low as I could, to get the perspective I wanted.
For the violet, I had to shoot blind since I set my camera flat on the sidewalk – I took at least five photos before getting the one I wanted. It’s a subtle change, but I like the lower perspective better.
An artist whom I admire greatly, Mishi, encouraged me in this. Challenging me to not be afraid to ‘shoot from the hip.’ She is absolutely fearless in her photography.
Sometimes the first shot, the standing shot, is the one you’ll like better. But, sometimes… a change of perspective opens a whole new world to you.

I love these challenges because I need to learn – and REMEMBER. This is one I’ve heard before but haven’t always been good about doing. It’s so key when taking pics of the wee ones though. They always turn out better from a lower perspective!

I like this project. I am always lying on the ground in the dirt, embarrassing my children. This past saturday, my bottom got thoroughly soaked as I sat in the grass behind the baseball back stop waiting for that perfect shot.
One of these days, I am going to learn to pack a waterproof pad or something to take along in my camera bag!
