100 Word Challenge: Fancy

It’s that time of year… days are getting longer, flowers are budding out, spring is mere days away, and pastel candy eggs and white Easter bonnets fill the store aisles.

I remember as a kid that Easter was the one holiday I was assured of getting a pretty new outfit to wear to Church. On a few occasions I even had lacy, white gloves.

The whole congregation was a sea of pinks, baby blues, pale yellows and foam greens. What we also had was shiny patent leather shoes that we wore only once a year on Easter Sunday.

Though… if my grandmother had her way, I would’ve never wore such finery.

Ever the prim and proper Southern Lady, she admonished my mother about the temptations of these shiny shoes. An inappropriate person may use the highly reflective surface of my patent leather Mary Janes to catch a peek at my fancy, ruffled, undies.

Scandalous for a tiny, preschooler that just wanted to show off her fancy Easter clothes.

This week’s word is:

Fancy

  1. “She’s too fancy for you,” sniffed the mother of the groom. By ‘fancy,’ of course, she meant rich. Her disapproval, so familiar, had grown dull. Anyway he was elsewhere, scanning the sky. The ceremony was to be outdoors; already the wedding planner’s minions had carted chairs inside and then back out again. The young man glanced at his mother, her words foreign to him, foreign to love. Just then the sky broke open. He smiled. Here, finally, his mother interrupted. “My life,” he whispered, lifting his face to the hard rain. “Mine!” Nothing (rain, chairs) and nobody to stop it.

  2. This brought back vivid memories. Here is my submission for this week.

    FANCY
The yearly trip to get a new spring outfit. They found a green dress with a matching coat. The bonus was a white woven straw hat and a shiny white purse. The hat and purse had artificial apple blossoms on them. The flowers perfectly picked up the green that looked just like a Granny Smith apple. The moment she tried it on she loved it. “Oh, please, Mom, can we get it?” She watched as her mother calculated the cost. Her mother looked sad. “Please, please?”

Moments later she skipped to the car with the bag holding her new clothes.
