100 Word Challenge: Obsession

I like to crochet. It calms me.

My aunt taught me how to make basic granny squares when I was around ten. Since then I taught myself how to read a pattern chart and have, to some degree, mastered a few difficult techniques.

It’s not a craft that I practice all the time. I’ll get an itch and work on projects for a few months, then it sort of trails off. I have several a few unfinished projects tucked away in closets and storage bins in the attic.

Before Christmas, my son asked me to make a couple of baby blankets for his friends who were expecting. I also made several lace snowflakes for holiday gifts for family and friends.

Because I have such an extensive stash of yarn – about 36 partial skeins in as many different colors – I didn’t need to buy any extra to finish these gift projects. Because I have such an extensive stash of yarn, two things were obvious: 1) I have a yarn hoarding problem and 2) I need to thin out the herd.

To that end, I began a 365 Granny Squares project on Jan. 1. Using scrap yarn, I’m crocheting a square a day for 2018. I’m 30 squares in and am finally making a dent in my leftover stockpile. (I have also crocheted three accent pillows using bulky yarn I’m not using in my 365 project.)

But… I still had this niggling feeling that the yarn I was culling through wasn’t all I had, so I went digging. I found one other bin I knew I had, A 24 gallon plastic container filled to overflowing with all sorts of yarn, in all sorts of weights, in all sorts of colors, but none that would work in my Granny Square project.

I knew there was more, dug a little further, and hit the Mother Lode. Some is extra yarn I got for baby blanket projects from more than four years ago, but the rest… I have no clue why I have it or what I planned to make with it.

Looks like I need to find more “use up the stockpile” projects. Be forewarned friends and family, you all will be receiving handmade crocheted gifts for the next several years.

Now, if only I could remember why I needed two dozen skeins of Oxford Gray wool yarn.

      It started when I received a scented candle as a birthday gift. I mentioned how nice it was, and soon nearly every present I received added to the collection.

      They were never used, but my orders for storage boxes multiplied.

      ’Coloured candles, 20 for £1’ screamed at me from the local Poundshop, and were impossible to resist. Even plain old white squat ones were useful for the mini chandelier ornaments.

      Two demented politicians- well, you know the rest. Apocalypse. No electricity, no heating, no lighting, but my obsession came into its own. All I need now is a matchbox collector.

    1. I had to reacquaint myself with many stitches, but there are a plethora of resources online. I’m watching/working along videos for the 365 project. It’s very easy to follow.
