100 Word Challenge: Forgetful

I tend to bruise easily. As in, brush up against a table – bruise. Barked a shin on the padded ottoman – bruise. Rattle my head on a low hanging shelf in the laundry room that your husband rounded the corners on so you wouldn’t put an eye out – bruise.

I also have a high pain tolerance so I don’t always realize when I’ve done something bruise worthy. When I do all these klutzy things, things that do eventually bruise, I also tend to forget them, completely. The only evidence is the black, blue, green and purple marks blooming on my arms, legs, hips, and forehead, and me without a clue how I injured myself.

So, this weekend while my husband and I were swapping a new GE refrigerator out with our 20-year-old KitchenAid (destined to live out the remainder of its days as a garage/beer fridge), the inevitable happened.

There was lots of moving of large things. Aside from the two fridges, I also had to move a bench out of my foyer. I just spun it around 270°, filling a good portion of my hallway, and creating a sort of obstacle course along with the vacuum cleaner, broom, and mop.

Of course, these new objects to navigate, even ones I place in the hallway myself, were too tempting and I ran dead-on into a corner of the bench. As I did it, I thought, “that’s gonna leave a mark.”

I knew it would bruise, and I knew I would forget where I got the bruise. I didn’t want to forget. I made a sign. It was actually just a blue Post-it note detailing how the emerging bruise was created then stuck it on my pant leg, wearing it around like a badge of honor.

For the first time in who knows how long, I was finally able to tell my MISTER the bench bit me when he asked where the dark blue bruise just above my right knee came from.

“Blessed are the forgetful, for they get the better even of their blunders.” Friedrich Nietzsche

  1. I wrote about a childhood holiday in Wales and showed my family.

‘You’ve forgotten that the car broke down three times,’ said Mum. ‘Your dad reconnected the exhaust with bandages and glue.’

‘I thought that was in Scotland.’

‘Nope. And you’ve forgotten how you were always wandering off in a daydream and we could never find you.’

‘There was a dragon to find, but no-one helped. At least I wasn’t naughty like Julia.’

My sister objected, ‘I was as good as gold.’

    ‘Yeah right,’ I retorted.

‘Memories are mostly made up,’ said Mum, ‘but they’re more fun that way.’

  2. Yikes! Discovering bruises all the time is not fun.
This prompt made me wonder what it would be like to never be able to forget. Here’s my attempt the prompt.

    Forgetful
She waited in the forest under their tree. At first excited, as the sun rose higher in the sky, she began to cry. Once again her sweetheart had forgotten her. Sadly, she left.

The god who lived within the tree could no longer tolerate it. He had witnessed it too many times.

The young man finally arrived. The tree wrapped its branches around him. Holding tightly, he pronounced, “You are cursed forever. No one can undo this curse. Never again will you forget the pain you cause others. You will remember your every slight and forgotten appointment. Live in torment.”
