100 Word Challenge: Memories

I take a lot of photos. If you’ve hung out here long enough, you might remember when I posted pix from a weekly photo hike… I do miss those. I need to start them up again.

Usually, I use my Nikon DSLR when shooting, but sometimes, I just pull out my iPhone and snap something quick.

I am also terrible about deleting photos. Right now, I probably have close to 40,000 photos stored on several, separate computer files. At least 2,000 of those were on my phone. That’s a Two with Three Zeros. (Actually, it was 2,106 transferred photos.)

I did have that many on my phone until I remembered I have a Dropbox account. I didn’t want to down load all those photos to my laptop and eat up storage space there, so I packed them up and sent them off to Dropbox… and nearly filled my space limit there too.

As the photos went from my photo library to my Dropbox file, I would cull the one I didn’t want to keep at all. Afterward I was strangely uneasy, almost on the verge of panic. I was successful with the transfer, and could locate them in their new home, but I was still very anxious about the whole process.

I did keep a little more than a dozen pix on my phone. Photos of my kids, one or two of my pets, the Mister, and a few memes. It’s odd seeing all my saved pictures on a single screen and not having to scroll forever to find the image I want.

Now that I have all that open space, I need to take more pictures.

“There are too many books I haven’t read, too many places I haven’t seen, too many memories I haven’t kept long enough.” ~ Irwin Shaw

This week’s word is:

Memories

What to do:

Using “memories” for inspiration, write 100 Words – 100 exactly – no more, no less. You can either use the word – or any form of the word – as one of your 100, or it can be implied. Include a link in your post back here, and add your story to the Mister Linky list. If you don’t have a blog, you can leave your submission in the comment section, or as a Facebook status post. Remember to keep spreading the love with supportive comments for your fellow Wordsters.

  1. I’ve never tried to water ski but I did once try to pet a duck! Here is my 100 words on MEMORY.

“Go ahead. You can pet him.”

I looked back at my Dad giving me permission. The duck came over to the fencing. I put my little four year old hand through the space. I leaned in. I felt the duck. It was white and pretty with soft feathers and a bright orange beak. Suddenly, he whipped his head around and bit me! Shocked, I cried and ran to my father.

Dad’s 93 now but he still laughs about the day the duck bit me. I laugh. I can vividly see the scene. I fondly remember but somehow I feel betrayed.

  2. In his wetsuit Dad, appearing and disappearing in crashing waves, looked like an orca failing to catch a penguin.

He got on the surf board, lay down, got up on one knee and fell off. He got on the surf board, lay down, got up on one knee, almost stood up and… fell off. And repeat.

We really wanted Dad to succeed. We leaned forward and tensed… then he fell off again.

After what felt like about a year but was probably about two hours, Dad gave up.

‘At least I tried,’ he said, ‘which is more than you did.’

  3. Funnily enough – I’m writing a sort of semi memoir at the moment and spent most of today writing that. May do my 100 word about that! Also wading through some old writing which is about losing touch – pre Facebook! It may be my blog post for tomorrow. !
