Photo taken at Fort Pickens State Park, near Pensacola, FL. Built between 1829 and 1834, the fort was a key military installation during the Mexican-American War, the Civil War, World War I and II, guarding the entrance to Pensacola Harbor. From 1886 until 1913 the fort also served as a prison for captive Native Americans taken in the Apache Wars. Most notably, Geronimo was held there from 1886 until 1888, when he and the remaining Apache prisoners were transferred to Mount Vernon Barracks, north of Mobile, AL. The fort remained in use until being decommissioned in 1947. It was later designated a Florida State Park, then incorporated into the Gulf Islands National Seashore in 1971. After extensive restoration, it reopened to the public in 1976.
