100 Word Challenge: Yarn

Clutter is a way of life at my house. I used to say that my home wasn’t messy, it was “lived in.” It’s not that I haven’t tried to get control of the tsunami of accumulated STUFF, but most of it isn’t mine and getting rid of any of it would set off an epic battle of wills.

I say “most” isn’t mine… I do have a ridiculous amount of books, so many that I fear I may never read them all. That doesn’t keep me from buying more though.

There is also a vast amount of crafting supplies spread out among several rooms. When I get an itch, I crochet – lately it’s been baby blankets. My friends and family are apparently a prolific people.

I love yarn…. there I said it. As much as I’m attracted to books by their cover art, pretty skeins of wool and cotton pull me in like a magnet. I’ve been known to buy yarn just because I like the colors, with no immediate plans or idea what to do with it.

Since I’ve been nagging politely asking my menfolk to put a moratorium on their hoarding purchases, I felt I should make some sort of conciliatory gesture. I decided to sort and organized my yarn collection.

I found an empty storage bin (that in itself is like finding a unicorn around my house), bought a few boxes of oversized, clear storage bags and went to work. I separated skeins by color and weight, by material (cotton, wool, bamboo, acrylic), by project (I did have a few unfinished items), and whether they were whole or partial skeins.

There was a lot of yarn strewn across my living room while I was working to collect everything into some sort of orderly fashion. There is still a lot of yarn, but now it’s all in individual bags, and easily searchable for future projects.

Hopefully, I can deplete some of my crocheting supplies before I feel compelled to get more yarn, but ask me again this fall when it starts to get colder.
