100 Word Challenge: Room

About a year and a half ago, our daughter, our oldest child, moved out of the family home. It’s all good. She found her Big Girl job and wanted to join the ranks of Independent Women.

I had one less kid at home, and one extra – empty – bedroom.

Oh, the plans I had… I was going to move out all the remaining bedroom furniture, clear out the closet, straighten up the desk and move into my new office. I was going to have a room of my own where I could write fiction.

That was the plan anyway. What I actually got was a huge walk-in closet, a glorified storage unit, a black hole of household jetsam with barely enough space to turn around.

Any attempts to reclaim the space were met with more boxes being moved in, or more clothes hung in an already burgeoning closet. It was as if the button-downs and cardigans were multiplying like rabbits.

Every inch of the desk is covered in old mail and abandoned craft projects. An extra clothes rack was moved in and has caught whatever propagating affliction the closet has. Every time I go in there, I see new junk.

My “office” is the right corner of my living room couch. I prop my feet up on the ottoman, plunk my laptop down and type away. There’s where I wrote this. I can only dream of what it would be like to have a dedicated space, a room all to myself.

Perhaps one day I can wrest control back from the insidious clutter that has taken over. I wonder if I could convince the Mister to put up a shed for me in the backyard. I hear that shipping containers can be converted into living space. I don’t need much room, just a little place for just me… and maybe a potted plant or two.
