Extra fine sugar

The beaches along the Florida Gulf Coast are stunning. That’s not just a residency bias, they are truly beautiful. Soft, and white, and stretching for 100s of miles.

More so in winter, than any other time of the year, the white sand beaches are often mistaken for snow. Even the dunes look like drifts.

If you look closely though, the sand isn’t really white… it’s clear. The crystal quartz of the Gulf Coast is as fine, and light, as sugar.

These beaches are part of the Gulf Shores National Seashore near Navarre, FL and near Fort Pickens State Park in Pensacola, FL.

  1. Your pictures show how kind the ocean can be, especially after the hurricane of Sandy that tore apart the east coast. Thank you for reminding us how beautiful the ocean is.

  2. Beautiful photos. I can almost feel the sand between my toes and hear the waves as they crash on the beach. The water is so clear. I didn’t think it would be (can you tell I have never been to the Gulf Coast?)
