For the past few weeks, I’ve been participating in a new writing community Trifecta. The powers-that-be there have asked that we tell each other a little about ourselves. I can’t pass up a good meme…
- What is your name (real or otherwise): Tara Roberts, sometimes just Tara R. Once upon a time it was Opalstorm ~ long story…
- Describe your writing style in three words: Eclectic, haphazard, unpredictable. I write fiction, non-fiction, some poetry. A little bit of everything.
- How long have you been writing online: I started my first blog in June, 2007, and my most recent incarnation in December, 2010.
- Which, if any, other writing challenges do you participate in: I write with Velvet Verbosity’s 100 Word Challenge (which is currently on hiatus) , Indie Ink, Story Dam, and Haiku Friday. I also successfully completed National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2010 and 2011.
- Describe one way in which you could improve your writing: I am terrible at maintaining consistent verb tenses within a single story, and I’m heavy-handed with commas. I need to focus more on my fundamentals.
- What is the best writing advice you’ve ever been given: Given during a pep talk when I tried my first NaNoWriMo – “…you are not writing a good book, you are writing a good draft.” ~ Holly Black. The thought was to just write, get all your ideas on paper, then you can go back later to edit.
- Who is your favorite author: I tend to gravitate toward the escapism of Science Fiction/Fantasy. I read Neil Gaiman, Christopher Moore, Anne McCaffrey, Patricia McKillip, Ray Bradbury, Asimov, Herbert…
- How do you make time to write: I’m a SAHM to a fairly, self-sufficient teen, and am a terrible housekeeper. Other than the time I’m out on photo hikes, I do a lot of writing.
- Give us one word we should consider using as a prompt: Safe. It was difficult to find a word that I was confident I could use the third definition correctly. That was harder than I expected. I have a new-found respect for what you do.
- Direct us to one blog post of yours that we shouldn’t miss reading: This one was one of the hardest posts for me to write, then hit Publish… “I’m ugly“

That post is definitely an eye opener, I feel the same way at times. I am glad that I made my way over here to check out your blog, and to say hello. With that being said I will go back and hide in my own little corner of the world. Maybe you’d like to come check me out and say hi as well. 🙂

Your “I’m Ugly” piece is truth sent winging through the air. I commented there. And it is a pleasure to meet you. I am also a diverse writer. Had a magazine column for years and did freelance mag work even longer, have had three non-fiction books published by two different publishers, then a poetry chapbook picked up by a third. I seem to be in a poetry phase, and am just conceptualizing a full-length manuscript on “Clarity.”

Yay, loved reading this! I have comma obsession, too, I think. I’d rather there be too many than not enough, I guess. I went back and read “I’m ugly,” and it made me think. Definitely, you are are not ugly, just human like all of us. Being able to recognize in ourselves where it is that we have room for improvement is beautiful. Like you.
