He’s got CRAZY hair!

I mentioned here that my son had finally agreed to get a hair cut. I know some parents will question that statement: ‘agreed to a hair cut.’ I learned a while back to pick my battles with my kids. Hair was a battle I didn’t need to win.

Both were told to keep it clean, keep it brushed and you get to decide on length. Neither wanted to change colors, but even then I don’t think it would matter. Hair grows back…

Both kids have beautiful blond hair. My daughter’s, especially in the summer, has hints of strawberry and natural golden highlights. For most of her life, she has kept it long.

My son, who was born with cornsilk blond hair – almost white when he was a toddler – had military-style buzz cuts from elementary school through middle school. By the time he reached high school, he asked to let it grow longer.

Little did we know that longer meant, ‘never cut it again.’

As it grew up, we saw that unlike the rest of the family who had ruler straight hair, his had a touch of curl to it and it grew out a darker shade of blond.

For the last five years or so, he maybe got it cut twice a year. When it got so long that he couldn’t keep it out of his eyes, he’d relent and get a few inches off. Of course, we’d ‘ooohhh’ and ‘aaahhh’ over how nice he looked in the hopes that he’d keep it shorter. It never worked.

Once while out shopping with his dad, a little girl became quite taken with The Boy’s beautiful tresses, declaring to her instantly mortified mom, ‘That boy has CRAZY hair!’ And, he did. It was well past his shoulders, wavy, thick and the color of bronze.

Back to the haircut. Yesterday was the first day back to school for The Boy and in anticipation he asked me to set a hair cut appointment for him this past Saturday. This is his second year at tech school and his instructor told him at the end of last year he would either have to wear a hairnet or put it in a ponytail as a safety measure. (He is studying automotive maintenance and repair – lots of moving parts to tangle long hair, it could get ugly.)

The Boy wouldn’t tell me how he was getting it cut, only that he wanted to surprise me. Surprise me he did… he asked his stylist (a lovely woman who has been cutting his hair for about three years) to remove four inches. FOUR! (and it’s still longer than mine.)

Once it dried, the surprise was his. All the weight from his long hair had been hiding how much curlier it had become.

Women pay the big bucks for hair like this!

I’ve blurred his face (for his privacy), but here are the final Before/After shots.
